Directors Guild of America
The Directors Guild of America Award for outstanding directing in a feature film has been around since 1948. It is the best guide to who wins the Academy Award for Best Direction as it has only failed to select the same recipient 9 out of 66 times. There have only been three occasions when the winner was not even nominated for an Academy Award...Steven Spielberg for "The Color Purple" in 1985, Ron Howard for "Apollo 13" in 1995 and Ben Affleck for "Argo" in 2012. For the record, Alejandro González Iñárritu received the award last weekend for "Birdman". You can find the full list of winners here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Directors_Guild_of_America_Award
