mr kaplan

Mr. Kaplan (Drama/Comedy): 69 out of 100: This Spanish language film set in Uruguay is a mildly entertaining comedy that has some extremely melodramatic moments. The plot concerns an elderly gentleman accompanied by a recently hired driver who suspect that there is a Nazi from World War II in the neighbourhood so they attempt to track him down to bring him to justice.

The funniest scenes are definitely the ones involving their pursuit of the "Nazi", especially in the funeral home and on the beach. The less successful scenes are those that try to manipulate our emotions with the melodramatic moments.

There are some appealing shots of Uruguay which should tempt the travel enthusiast. Other than those shots, there's nothing else that is significant about the cinematography.

One must give credit to the cast as it is well-acted. The two leads appear to have a ball playing off each other. Things become more interesting when Néstor Guzzini as the driver enters the picture where the film takes on a buddy film approach.

If you don't mind a foreign language film, "Mr Kaplan" is an enjoyable romp but it would have been even better without the schmaltzy moments.
