insurgent

2015 review number 51:

Insurgent: (Science Fiction/Action): 64 out of 100: The sequel to "Divergent", this isn't as interesting as the first film as the storyline just isn't as captivating or thrilling. Everything is by the numbers and you just don't seem to care for any of the characters. There are some impressive visuals however with some solid action sequences.

Shailene Woodley returns as Beatrice who must confront her inner demons and continue her fight against the alliance led by Jeanine (Kate Winslet). She is supported by Four (Theo James) who also plays her love interest. The cast is rounded off with Naomi Watts playing Four's mother, Ansel Elgort as Caleb, Beatrice's brother and Miles Teller playing Peter, Beatrice's friend who just might be the enemy.

If you haven't seen the original, you will have a devil of a time trying to work out what is happening in this sequel. There are many references to the first film which provided a more interesting storyline. This one is just an excuse to stage some elaborate action sequences and showcase some spectacular CGI effects. Visually, it is an exciting film.

The cast does a fine job with what they have been given. The good looking males will ensure that teenage girls will enjoy seeing this film. It's just a shame that the story doesn't really power along. It's filled with cliches and sequences that don't really quite gel to become a 'whole' movie. It's never boring though; you just expect more from this type of movie where the heroine is out to save the world.

One cannot complain about the sound effects which complement the visuals well. The music is pretty generic but suits the theme and mood of the movie adequately. The visual and sound effects are the reasons why you should still experience this movie on the big screen.

The final film of the trilogy "Allegiant" will actually be split into two parts. I am hoping that there will be more depth to the characters and plot in the final two films. At least the Divergent series has kept me awake throughout both films, unlike the "Twilight" series.

Starring Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller, Kate Winslet and Naomi Watts
