2021 Top Ten Movies

It hasn't really been a standout year for movies. I haven't awarded any movies 9 or more out of 10. I have seen 585 movies this year, most of them new releases, so without further ado, here is my top 10 list for 2021 in alphabetical order:

Coda: A remake of the 2014 French film 'La Belier Family' about the only member of her family who is not hearing-impaired. How often does that happen when a Hollywood movie is better than the foreign language film it's based on?

King Richard: Knockout performance by Will Smith playing the father of tennis icons, Venus and Serena Williams. One of the better sports films made.

Last Night in Soho: Edgar Wright directs another winner. Visually stylish with a cool 1960s soundtrack. The box office receipts should have been better for this!

Luca: Pixar does it again! Emotional and humorous story with warm and endearing characters. This was my favourite animated film of 2021.

Minari: I was hoping this would receive the Best Picture Oscar instead of the overrated 'Nomadland'. Youn Yuh-jung thoroughly deserved her Best Supporting Actress Oscar for playing the comical grandmother.

Nobody: My favourite action film this year. Excellent action sequences and a top-notch performance from non-action star Bob Odenkirk. Excellent soundtrack too.

Parallel Mothers: The only foreign language movie on my list. Pedro Almodovar has hit another home run with his muse, Penelope Cruz. Spain didn't even nominate this film as their entry for Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards!

Promising Young Woman: Superb performance by Carey Mulligan in this fit for the times era of the "Me Too Movement". Frances McDormand won the Best Actress Oscar for 'Nomadland'. Carey Mulligan was robbed!

Red Rocket: An indie gem. Simon Rex as the has-been porn star and Suzanna Son as the teenager he lusts after deserve all the accolades headed their way in this witty and engaging movie.

West Side Story: My favourite movie of 2021, a remake of the 1961 film that's just as good, if not, better. Steven Spielberg proves that he can direct a grand-scale musical.
