shaun the sheep movie

2015 review number 66:

Shaun the Sheep Movie: (Animated/Family): 84 out of 100: This viewer has not seen one episode of "Shaun the Sheep" on TV. As a result, there were no expectations heading in to the cinema. What a delight this movie turned out to be! It just goes to show that a movie doesn't need to include dialogue to make it entertaining and enjoyable.

"Shaun the Sheep Movie" begins its story on the farm with some cleverly edited pieces of the daily routine. One morning, the sheep decide to trick the farmer and his dog so they can have some fun on the farm. Little do they realise the repercussions of trying to isolate the farmer and his dog from their day of fun. The farmer ends up in the city and it's up to the sheep and the farmer's dog to save him while being pursued by the animal containment officer.

For a movie without dialogue to work, there must be some genuine slapstick and general visual humour. Even for an adult this movie works. It reminds us of what silent movies used to be like for audiences. Children will be just as entertained by the colour and fast moving images they see on the screen. The humans mumble and grumble like Mr. Bean in the 1980s TV show. When Mr. Bean started to talk in his own big screen movies, he wasn't as funny. The mumbling voices adopted in this movie add to the appeal of the humour.

At a running time of 85 minutes, this movie flies by. There's enough happening on the screen to keep everyone amused. There are some scenes though that feature the animal containment officer which might frighten young children. These scenes are more implied than seen. It was terrific to have the villain included however, as this added to the fun of the story.

The score and soundtrack also provide energy, providing appropriate mood and atmosphere. You might find yourself tapping your feet to the beat of the songs and music. The music suitably complements the action scenes.

Even if you don't have any children to take to the cinema, see "Shaun the Sheep Movie" if you want to experience a fun and enjoyable time. It's a movie for adults just as much as it is for children.

Featuring the voices of Justin Fletcher and John Sparkes
(85 minutes)

Parental Advice: Some scary scenes
Additional scene during or after credits: Yes, during the credits the farmer is shocked to see himself on TV. After the credits, the rooster holds up a sign that says "The End" and turns it around showing the audience that it's time to go home. Finally, a sheep appears on the screen and starts vacuuming.
