kill the messenger

Kill the Messenger: (Drama): 74 out of 100: This is an intriguing story based on the true life events of Gary Webb (Jeremy Renner) who uncovers the role of the CIA in arming Contra rebels in Nicaragua and importing cocaine to the United States. He publishes a series of articles under the title of "Dark Alliance" and finds himself a victim of a vicious smear campaign by the CIA. He must subsequently defend his integrity, family and his own life.

Along with the principal cast led by a brilliant performance by Renner, there are many cameo appearances by people you will recognise including Ray Liotta, Andy Garcia, Robert Patrick and Michael Sheen. They are all integral to the development of the story which will have you intently watching and listening to what's being played out on the screen.

The characterisations help in gaining the viewer's attention. Even though there are many characters to keep track of, most are pieces of a jigsaw puzzle that come together to form a satisfying whole. There are only a few moments that cannot keep up with the tension generated in the story.

Many snippets are taken of real-life events which add to the credibility of the movie. Politicians are interviewed or captured giving speeches to demonstrate how much of a plague illegal drug use is in American culture.

If you like true life crime films then you should give "Kill the Messenger" a go. After seeing the film you might even be tempted to do some research of your own on the events that occurred after the publication of the articles.
