dumb and dumber to

2015 review number 11:

Dumb and Dumber To: (Comedy): 61 out of 100: This is not the total disaster I was expecting for there were some moments that made me laugh. However, there were many more scenes that didn't hit the target but the laughs more than compensated for them. If you liked the original "Dumb and Dumber" from 1994, then you will gain some satisfaction from this long-awaited sequel.

Jim Carrey (Lloyd) and Jeff Daniels (Harry) reprise their roles from 20 years ago. In this sequel, Lloyd has been at a nursing home for the past 20 years with his best friend Lloyd visiting him every week to care for him. Harry soon discovers that Lloyd has been pretending to be incapacitated for a practical joke. After leaving the facility, Harry receives some news that he needs a kidney transplant and tracks down his daughter who was given up for adoption in 1991, so she can provide him with her kidney. Together with Lloyd, they cause mischief wherever they go on their road trip.

Even though there are some dumb jokes that are befitting of the title, there are some funny scenes. However, if you don't like crude, juvenile jokes then they might not even make you smile. The story is just an excuse for the two leads to do dumb things to each other and to others. The jokes will probably be forgotten as soon as you leave the cinema.

Kathleen Turner makes a surprise appearance as the mother who gave up her daughter for adoption. She is not the sex siren she once was but shows a natural comedic flair. Riggle seems to be the go-to man for these crude comedies and proves himself adept in these situations. Rachel Melvin plays the daughter, Penny, and all she is required to do is to act dumb just like her two lead co-stars.

"Dumb and Dumber To" could have been absolutely awful but it gets by on the charm of the two main stars. Yes, there is a fair bit of overacting from them but they do bring life to their roles that makes it hard for us to resist their appeal. If you didn't like the original, then you won't like this sequel but if you don't mind Lloyd's and Harry's crazy antics, then you are bound to experience some fun.

Starring Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, Rob Riggle and Kathleen Turner
(109 minutes)
Parental Advice: Coarse language, sexual references, drug references and violence
Additional scenes during or after credits: Yes, during the credits there is footage from both the original and sequel. After the credits there is a scene with Harry and Lloyd riding on the back of a truck complaining about the wrong milkshakes they were given so they toss them behind, landing on the windshield of a vehicle behind them. Another scene has "Dumb and Dumber For" to be released in 2034 with Rob Riggle's character camouflaging with the sign.
