Sing 2

Sing, sing a song, sing out loud, sing out strong...

2021 Review Number 6:

Sing 2: (Animated Comedy/Musical): 68 out of 100: Five years after the original film accumulated $US634 million at the worldwide box office, comes this derivative sequel featuring the cast of characters which made 'Sing' so popular around the world. The sequel is nearly a carbon copy of the original where the lovable characters must band together in performing songs to achieve an outcome so if you haven't seen 'Sing', don't worry as you'll capture the essence of what that was about in 'Sing 2'.

Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) has a grand vision to take his show to Redshore City for a larger audience. With the help of his friends, Rosita the pig (Reese Witherspoon), Johnny the gorilla (Taron Egerton), Meena the elephant (Tori Kelly), Gunter the pig (Nick Kroll), and Ash the porcupine (Scarlett Johansson), he must convince entrepreneur, Jimmy Crystal (Bobby Cannavale) to finance his production. Crystal will only consider doing this if Buster can track down the reclusive Clay Calloway (Bono) to return to the stage.

'Sing 2' is definitely not in the league of many Pixar animated films where the viewer is emotionally bonded to the main characters. There's nothing deep and meaningful being relayed. This film is basically popcorn entertainment. The only emotions being displayed would be relating to Clay Calloway's struggle with himself after his wife died. For pure entertainment value for children, they will appreciate the movie for its movement and colours along with the huge collection of songs. Adults will also find themselves enjoying the soundtrack. It is a jukebox musical after all!

The familiar characters from the first film are brought back to continue their adventures. There are some laughs generated especially involving Gunter the pig. The two main characters introduced in this sequel feature the distinctive voice talents of Bobby Cannavale who convincingly plays the villain while Bono makes his animated film debut as the grieving Clay Calloway. His use of expression actually projects the dramatic moments adequately. Fans of U2 will also appreciate Bono singing one of their hit songs.

Although 'Sing 2' has a running time of nearly 2 hours, there's enough happening in each scene to ensure that children are not bored. In the cinema I watched this in, not a peep could be heard from the children. If the target audience is for children under 10 then this movie has largely succeeded. However, for adults who would appreciate more emotional character interactions and a significant message in the story, then this sequel is merely a pleasant diversion.

Featuring the voices of Matthew McConaughey, Scarlett Johansson, Reese Witherspoon, Taron Egerton, Tori Kelly, Nick Kroll, Bobby Cannavale and Bono
