magic in the moonlight

Magic in the Moonlight (Comedy) 75 out of 100: From the creative mind of Woody Allen comes this slight but enjoyable comedy about an illusionist (Colin Firth) attempting to expose a clairvoyant (Emma Stone) as a fraud. As expected in a Woody Allen comedy, there are some witty lines of dialogue which make the viewing experience all that more pleasurable.

Set in the 1920s, the production design, songs and costumes brilliantly recreate that era. It is evident that there has been great attention to detail. The cinematography allows the sets to shine.

Colin Firth and Emma Stone are appealing as the leads but there is a bit of overacting at times on Firth's part. The plot takes a detour when there is a sign of romance and you do have to suspend disbelief with the outcome. The supporting cast including Jacki Weaver and Eileen Atkins have their chance to shine in some very funny scenes.

This is not Woody Allen's finest work but even when he is not at the top of his game, his films outshine others. It is a pleasant diversion that could well be one of my guiltiest pleasures of 2014.
