the equalizer

The Equalizer (Action/Thriller): 79 out of 100: The premise of a vigilante hunting down a young prostitute's attackers is not going to appeal to everyone. Those who are against revenge movies will likely be deterred by this film. However, if you want to be thoroughly entertained and not even notice the 2 hour plus running time, then this Denzel Washington starring vehicle comes highly recommended.

It's hard to believe that Denzel Washington has appeared on the big screen for more than 30 years. Again, he shows that he is one of the finest black actors of his generation with his moody portrayal of a vigilante with a hidden past. Chloe Grace Moretz nails her role as a young prostitute in what could be called a brave performance. Although the villains occasionally appear to be cardboard characters, the actors who portray them do a fine job.

This movie has been directed by the same man who directed Denzel Washington in "Training Day", the movie which won him a Best Actor Oscar. Antoine Fuqua incorporates a fair bit of style and uses Boston to great effect, adding another dimension to the narrative. Occasionally his visuals become too stylish but they are interesting, nevertheless.

There is a fair bit of violence which will turn off some viewers. Several of these scenes become over the top but they do efficiently highlight the brutal and ugly nature of this criminal world. Think of a way someone can be killed and you're likely to see it in some of these superbly staged action scenes.

"The Equalizer" is not a movie for everyone but it will keep you on the edge of the seat if you go along for the ride. If you are a fan of Denzel Washington, you can't miss it.
