the tale of the princess kaguya

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya: (Animation): 79 out of 100: There are two versions of this film, one dubbed with American actor voices and the other being the original version in Japanese. For an authentic experience, make sure you see the Japanese version like I did. You will become immersed in Japanese traditions and culture. Hearing American voices would detract from the Japanese experience.

Based on the Japanese folktale "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter", this production from animation renowned Studio Ghibli focuses on a tiny girl who is found inside a stalk of bamboo. The man who finds her is an old bamboo cutter. Together with his wife, they raise her as their own child and discover that she grows quickly into an exquisite young lady. Her father is convinced that she is a princess and moves to the city so she can be treated like one. Word soon spreads that she is beautiful and royal. She enthralls all who meet her including five potential noble suitors.

This is a beautifully hand-drawn film that would appeal more to adults than children. The narrative is deep and meaningful with few songs and action sequences...the types of animated films that would appeal to young children. This has more of an epic feel with a powerful, sweeping narrative with engaging characterisation. Although there is great depth to the characters and story, the film could have been tightened by a 20 minute trim.

The music score is simply divine and complements the striking visuals. The hand-drawn images actually work well in that they make the viewers feel they are turning the pages of a book. If you appreciate beautiful art then you should admire the animation. There's a gentle, charming and delightful nature to it all.

"The Tale of the Princess Kaguya" is another in the long line of Japanese animated films that pleases an adult audience. If you enjoyed movies like "The Wind Rises" and "Howl's Moving Castle" then you should get a lot out of this film.
