a most wanted man

A Most Wanted Man (Drama/Thriller): 72 out of 100: Based on John le Carré's espionage novel, this is the final film to feature Philip Seymour Hoffman in the lead role before his untimely death earlier this year. As usual, he delivers a strong performance, this time as the German 'spy' who is in charge of an anti-terrorist unit.

The first half of the film plods along due to its heavy exposition and intensive dialogue, which won't appeal to action fans. It's not until about the one hour mark when the first scenes of action take place. That's when everything clicks into place and the roles of the characters are made clear, although it is quite a journey to get there.

It is a well-acted film, highlighted by Hoffman's performance with solid support from his co-stars. Hamburg is used to great effect as the location of the narrative and is like another character in the film.

If you are a fan of John le Carré's novels, you should appreciate this film but those who prefer the action in other spy films like The Bourne trilogy and the James Bond series will feel a bit let down.

Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel McAdams, Willem Dafoe and Robin Wright
