big game

2015 review number 62:

Big Game: (Action): 74 out of 100: An action film that doesn't take itself too seriously can be fun and entertaining and "Big Game" is exactly this. There are many scenes that don't stand up to logic plus you have to suspend disbelief but nothing can take away the enjoyment factor that you will experience while seeing this film.

Samuel L. Jackson is US President William Moore whose Air Force One is shot out of the sky by terrorists. Before his plane is shot down, he manages to leave in an escape pod. When he lands on the ground, he is rescued by a young Finnish boy Oskari (Onni Tommila) who is out to prove to his father and community that he is ready to be a man. To do this he must be able to snare some sort of big game. The two come together to try to escape from the terrorists who are hunting them down.

The developing friendship between President Moore and Oskari is a lot of fun. There is a fair bit of humour in their scenes which demonstrates how this movie shouldn't be taken too seriously. Jackson and Tommila appear to be enjoying themselves. Stevenson as the villain does his best to be threatening and succeeds. The CIA control room includes veteran actors in Broadbent, Ted Levine, Felicity Huffman and Victor Garber and they add to the excitement of the spectacle.

One of the most impressive features of this movie is the spectacular scenery. The Alps stands in for the Finnish landscape and its majestic beauty is showcased throughout. Another standout is the music score which soars to great heights. The score adds to the thrills and excitement of the movie.

Some action scenes will leave you shaking your head in disbelief. Those viewers who prefer logic in their films are advised to steer clear. The script is also corny at times but that reflects on the popcorn nature of this movie.

"Big Game" was a big surprise in that it was so enjoyable and entertaining. It's better than your average action film as the cast is top notch while the humour infuses an energy which is sadly lacking in films of this genre. Don't head to the cinema expecting everything to make sense and you will appreciate this movie.
