the purge: anarchy

The Purge: Anarchy (Horror/Thriller/Action): 67 out of 100: This is the sequel to last year's "The Purge". It has completely different characters and rather than have the scenes shot mainly in the home like the original, this one has many scenes filmed on the streets to show the devastation that the annual purge can cause.

It is the year 2023 and the US government has allowed one night of the year where citizens can commit any crime they wish to purge their sins. It is a nasty premise for a film and allows for plenty of violence. With this in mind, there are moments where you might have to close your eyes or turn away from what is being depicted on the screen.

Although the story meanders at times, a fair bit of tension is generated, even allowing for some unnecessary slow motion sequences. The majority of the film is shot at night and although difficult to see at times, adds to the atmosphere and mood of the piece.

It features a cast that I am unfamiliar with but they all do a fine job in highlighting the tension they are experiencing. Some of the close-ups of these actors go a bit overboard with the shaky camera but they express themselves well during these scenes.

"The Purge: Anarchy" is definitely not for the faint-hearted and those against revenge films and gratuitous violence won't like it. However, if you want disposable entertainment, this film should please you.
