paul blart: mall cop 2

2015 review number 65:

Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2: (Comedy): 33 out of 100: The sequel to the 2009 surprise box office smash is an exercise in painful viewing. From what I remember, the original film was an occasionally funny, albeit forgetful experience. This time around I laughed just once.

The flimsy plot revolves around Paul Blart (Kevin James), the security guard who keeps shopping malls safe, going on a holiday with his daughter, Maya (Raini Rodriguez) to Las Vegas. His holiday plans are to attend a security guard expo and to enjoy some precious moments with Maya before she heads off to college. Once there, he discovers that plans are afoot to steal some valuable paintings from the hotel where he is staying. It is left to Paul Blart to help save the day and to rescue his daughter from danger.

If you want to see how people should not act, see this movie. The performances are lame across the board. James resorts to slapstick which doesn't generate any laughs while the interactions between the characters are boring. I started drifting off after 20 minutes. I'm surprised I lasted this long.

It's a crime to advertise this as a comedy. There's probably more action taking place than laughs. Even the action scenes are non-events involving lots of running and riding around on a Segway. James was one of the co-writers. Somebody ask him now why he wrote such nonsense!

One of the beauties of filming in Las Vegas is making use of the wonderful interior and exterior locations. At least the film offers some striking visuals but that's not enough to stop you from nodding off.

All is not doom and gloom with "Paul Blart 2: Mall Cop" as it offers hope to all those aspiring amateur filmmakers to produce better material than this tripe. I just review movies but I'm sure I can come up with something better than this if I were asked to make a movie.
