pride

Pride (Comedy/Drama): 78 out of 100: The British sure do feel-good movies well and this is no exception. Think of movies like "The Full Monty and "Billy Elliot" and you'll know what I mean...down and out characters who are likeable and win the hearts of the audience.

This film set primarily in Wales, is about a group of gay activists who support striking miners in 1984. The atmosphere created during these protest scenes add great weight to the narrative. If you lived through this period, you will be able to recall some of these key events of the National Union of Mineworkers strike in the mid eighties. Some of the characters are real life people but of course some fictionalised scenes have been included to add to the dramatisation.

All the actors perform with distinction. There are some familiar faces in the cast list below but it's the unfamiliar ones that steal the limelight at times. They are helped by the setting which offers a fantastic view of some places in England and Wales. The music also plays a key role in the setting with a terrific score and some fun, enjoyable 80s songs.

There are some hilarious scenes with dialogue to match. However, there are some stereotypes when it comes to the gay jokes. If you can ignore these, you'll definitely feel proud to see "Pride".
