jurassic world

2015 review number 88:

Jurassic World: (Action/Adventure): 76 out of 100: Your enjoyment factor of Jurassic World would be based on how much you were entertained by the original trilogy which began in 1993 and ended in 2001. The cutting edge technology of CGI effects was introduced in Jurassic Park and the wow factor had definitely made it an eye-catching experience for many cinemagoers. The latest dinosaur installment continues the impressive CGI lineage, ensuring a fun time for those who enjoy popcorn experiences at their best.

A new theme park has been built on the original site of Jurassic Park. After a decade of operation, visitor rates are declining so the chief operations manager Masrani (Irrfan Khan) insists that the park create a genetically modified dinosaur which will add more thrills and spills to the crowd interaction. On the day when this killing machine escapes containment, Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) who maintains the daily running of the park has her two nephews, Gray (Ty Simpkins) and Zach (Nick Robinson) visiting Jurassic World, and along with velociraptor wrangler Owen (Chris Pratt), must ensure that everyone's safety is guaranteed.

There are several scenes of genuine terror that will strike fear especially in little children, hence this film is not recommended to those under the age of ten. There are some cute moments with the gentle dinosaurs which they will appreciate but for the majority of the scenes, the story would be more appealing to adult audiences. It won't win any awards for its story however, with some cheesiness included such as two characters sharing an intimate moment when all hell breaks loose. What the film has going for it is the suspense factor, with some scenes even more terrifying than horror movies.

The human characters take a back seat to the action involving the dinosaurs. These are stock characters ranging from the hero portrayed by Chris Pratt to the military man with his own agenda played by Vincent D'Onofrio. People would flock to the cinema to experience the thrilling effects of the dinosaurs, not the interactions between the human characters so for this, Jurassic World has achieved its aim of entertaining audiences. The introduction of the Indominus Rex is a major addition to the superior suspense level.

Although the visual effects are spectacular, one can easily become blasé with them considering the abundance of CGI movies today. However, they still maintain the wow factor, especially when the dinosaurs engage in battles. Add the impressive sound effects and you have a technically efficient movie. Seeing this on an IMAX screen in 3D also contributes immensely to the experience.

John Williams' memorable themes are heard a couple of times and it's a credit to Michael Giacchino that he instills a sense of mood and atmosphere with his own tunes. The full orchestrations are evident throughout the movie and they're a nod to his own hero in John Williams.

The box office success of Jurassic World will ensure that some sequels will be filmed. Director Colin Trevorrow has ensured that Steven Spielberg's original vision remains embellished in movie history and the interest in dinosaurs continues today with his take on a futuristic world which is technologically superior, although inhabited by some clichéd characters.
