island of lemurs: madagascar

2015 review number 25:

Island of Lemurs: Madagascar: (Documentary): 75 out of 100: Morgan Freeman must be the king of narrators because he does the voice over yet again, this time for an IMAX documentary that is a lot of fun as the stars of the show are so cute.

Morgan Freeman narrates in his rich, dulcet tones with information on the oldest known primates. Even though the documentary goes for only 40 minutes, you will discover many interesting facts about a few different types of lemur. Even though the lemurs are the main stars, there are some scenes involving humans and how they affect the lemur population. This isn't as fun or interesting as the lemur footage. I didn't really want to see a group of boys playing football in their village.

This is when slow motion doesn't detract from the viewing experience. There are some scenes showing lemurs performing physical actions and the slow motion sequences allow us to gaze in wonder and amazement. The camera work is brilliant and the photography positively delights, capturing the scenery and lemurs at their best. The use of 3D makes it feel like you are interacting with the lemurs.

Some people might be annoyed with the cute factor but why shouldn't the filmmakers have many close-ups of these creatures when they are so cute and adorable? The soundtrack also has some songs and musical pieces that are fun and match the actions of the lemurs on the screen. One of the best scenes involves a group of lemurs communicating by singing.

Freeman's silky smooth delivery makes it so easy for the audience to take in the information. His lines are not cheesy like some other animal documentaries tend to be. If he was my teacher in high school, I wouldn't be disinterested with what is being taught.

"Island of Lemurs: Madagascar" is a worthy addition to the IMAX documentary library. Even if you are not a fan of animal documentaries, these creatures will win you over with their cuteness and playfulness. Because of these factors, children will enjoy this documentary as much as adults.
