penguins of madagascar

2015 review number 39:

Penguins of Madagascar: (Animated): 75 out of 100: It's always fun to see an animated movie that doesn't take itself too seriously and this is one such movie. There's enough colour and movement to keep kids amused while the puns and references to Hollywood actors will keep adults entertained.

The movie begins in Antarctica where Skipper, Kowalski and Rico witness the hatching of Private. These lovable penguins play supporting roles in the "Madagascar" series so it's an origin story of sorts as we see how they leave their home. They end up joining forces with Classified (Benedict Cumberbatch) who is the leader of an undercover organisation called 'The North Wind'. Together they must stop the villainous Dr. Octavius Brine (John Malkovich) from changing the appearance of penguins forever.

You will not be bored as there is so much energy on the screen. Some might say it's too frantic. However, it was fun to see all the bother that the penguins found themselves in. Children will enjoy the slapstick humour and the adorable penguins but quite a few of the jokes will go over their heads. Not so with the adults who will enjoy some funny references to actors such as "Drew, Barry, more power" and "Robin, Wright this down".

It's a genuine popcorn animated film as there's not too much substance but while you are seeing it, you are thoroughly entertained. If it's not the humour or movement that engages you, it's the characters' voices that will draw your attention, as they are voiced with urgency and expression. Malkovich has the right tones for a villain while Cumberbatch has one of the best voices in film today.

The animation even takes you to places like Shanghai and Venice which are just as brightly coloured as the rest of the film. Attention to detail is evident in these scenes and it's remarkable how beautiful these scenes look.

"Penguins of Madagascar" is a fun family film for everyone to enjoy. It's not rocket scientist so don't expect anything deep and meaningful. Just go along for the ride and enjoy it for what it's worth, an animated film that shouldn't be taken too seriously. It might be as artificial as fairy floss or cotton candy, but it sure tastes good.

Featuring the voices of Tom McGrath, Chris Miller, John Malkovich and Benedict Cumberbatch
(92 minutes)
Parental advice: Low level slapstick violence
Additional scene during or after credits: Yes, during the credits we see the penguins, helped by Julien and Mort from "Madagascar", use the ray machine to change Private back to his normal appearance.
