big eyes

2015 review number 8:

Big Eyes: (Comedy/Drama): 81 out of 100: This is a visually beautiful film directed by Tim Burton who is renowned for making visually stylish films. The bright colours in the foreground and background perfectly balance in showcasing the main feature - the Keane "Big Eyes" paintings.

Amy Adams plays Margaret who has recently left her husband and taken her daughter with her to live in San Francisco. There she meets Walter Keane (Christoph Waltz) whom she promptly marries so her daughter can stay in her custody. They are both struggling painters until her paintings are seen in a jazz nightclub where Walter has hired some wall space to display them. He takes credit for her paintings and not long after meets Dick Nolan (Danny Huston), a gossip columnist who knows many celebrities. Soon, Walter is mingling with the rich and famous while they are raking in the dollars for the artworks. Matters become complicated when Walter is not who seems to be and Margaret is itching to gain recognition for her paintings.

Amy Adams is delightful as Margaret and brilliantly represents her emotions ranging from happiness to sadness. Christophe Waltz shows why he is a two time Oscar recipient, with his character's manic personality brought expertly to the fore. Danny Huston is the narrator of the film and does a commendable job acting as the gossip columnist while veteran actor Terence Stamp makes a welcome appearance as an art critic.

The setting of the film in the 50s and 60s comes to life in the beautiful cinematography and exquisite production design. It is a colourful film that demonstrates Burton's eye for detail. Long time music collaborator Danny Elfman again produces a fabulous score.

Even if you are not an art lover, you will be fascinated by this film based on true events. It just might encourage you to do further research on the Keanes and inspire you to paint the way that Margaret painted.
